Shirodhara is one of the most popular Ayurvedic treatment procedures, considered a variation of Pizhichil,
but specifically focused on the head. In this treatment, a stream of lukewarm medicated oil prescribed by the
doctor is poured continuously from a specific height onto the forehead, usually between the eyebrows. This is done
for 40 to 60 minutes, maintaining a constant temperature and rhythm, typically using a specialized pot with a small
hole that allows the oil to flow smoothly like a pendulum from left to right.
Shirodhara induces deep relaxation and is known for its calming, meditative effect. The person receiving it is
encouraged to keep their eyes closed and remain in a state of surrender, ideally without conscious thought. Many people
meditate, pray, or even fall asleep during the treatment, although staying in a restful awareness is
preferred.
The benefits include improved sleep, better immunity, enhanced sensory organ function, and improved skin health.
It acts as both a medication and meditation, making it suitable even for children who may not be able to meditate
voluntarily. It is particularly effective in autoimmune conditions, stress-related disorders, and
psychological imbalances.
Shirodhara indirectly supports the functioning of internal organs like the kidneys, liver, intestines,
and brain by acting through the central nervous system. It promotes overall well-being and can also be performed on
healthy individuals as a preventive and rejuvenating therapy.
Tarpanam and Vasti refer to the same treatment principle of localized oil retention.
