Tarpanam

Tarpanam or Vasti is the fourth and one of the most potent forms of external oil application in Ayurveda. Like Pichu, it is a localized treatment targeting a specific area of the body. A well-like boundary is constructed over the affected region using dough made from wheat or similar flour. Lukewarm medicated oil, as prescribed by the doctor, is then poured into this enclosure and retained for a specific duration, usually 40 to 45 minutes.

This therapy provides deeper absorption and sustained contact, offering superior benefits in managing degeneration, trauma, inflammation, and arthritis. It rehydrates and nourishes the joints, tendons, bones, and cartilage more effectively than other forms of oil application.

This treatment should not be confused with the internal enema therapy also called Vasti. Here, the term Vasti refers to the concept of retention. The oil is retained over the affected area for a set period, allowing targeted therapeutic action.

Based on the region of application, this treatment is further named:

  • Kati Vasti when done on the lower back.
  • Griva Vasti when on the neck.
  • Janu Vasti when on the knees.
  • Uro Vasti when on the chest
  • Jatara Vasti when on the abdomen.
  • Netra Vasti or Netra Tarpanam when on the eyes.

Tarpanam and Vasti refer to the same treatment principle of localized oil retention.
