Shirovasti

Shirovasti is a classical Ayurvedic treatment done on the head, as the name indicates. It is considered even more potent than Shirodhara in certain aspects, especially because it facilitates deeper absorption of the medicated oil into the scalp and underlying tissues. While it offers all the calming and rejuvenating benefits of Shirodhara, its primary edge lies in its effectiveness in treating degenerative conditions like cervical spondylitis, neck-related issues, ENT disorders, and certain neurological problems.
This therapy significantly improves the functioning of the sense organs, particularly the eyes and ears. It is usually performed during the warmer part of the day, around noon or just after lunch, to support better absorption of the oil. Since Shirovasti is one of the most intense external oil therapies, it requires the patient to follow a strict regime, including specific dietary restrictions and lifestyle adjustments. The patient's digestive fire must be optimal, and they must be free from conditions like fever, flu, or indigestion before beginning the treatment.

Shirovasti is not performed on the first few days of therapy but is typically introduced after proper preparatory treatments, making it part of a well-planned therapeutic sequence. It is a strengthening procedure and often includes the use of nourishing medicated oils, sometimes processed with meat soups or juices for added potency.

During the treatment, the patient is seated comfortably on a chair, and a special leather cap resembling a chef’s hat is fastened around their head. The edges are sealed using wheat flour paste or similar natural adhesives to create a leak-proof chamber. Warm medicated oil, prescribed by the doctor based on the individual’s condition, is then poured into this chamber and retained for about 40 to 45 minutes.

Shirovasti is usually carried out as a course of seven sessions and is known for its powerful impact on neurological health, sensory perception, and musculoskeletal strength.
